Passau, the Bavarian Venice
Thanks to its Italian architects, Passau has Mediterranean flair. Gentle green hills rise on each side of the river banks. In the north, the pilgrimage church of Mariahilf and in the south, the Veste Oberhaus look down over the town. The Old Town is situated on a narrow peninsula where the rivers Danube and Inn meet. The cathedral of St Stephan stands in the middle of the Old Town on a small hill. The cathedral organ with its 17,774 pipes and 233 registers, is the largest church organ in the world.
Steep narrow lanes lead down to the rivers' banks. Churches, museums, craft shops,
small theatres, restaurants, pubs and discos exist here amid the Medieval town.
Concerts, shows and cabaret are offered all year round - not forgetting "Die Europaischen Wochen" the town's summer music and arts festival. The large university gives the town a youthful feel.
Passau, the town of three rivers. The green River Inn, the blue River Danube and the black River Ilz all join here creating a 'floating' Old Town. The three parts of the town - Innstadt, Ilzstadt and Altstadt each have there own characteristics, architecture, history and energy.
Passau is also a town bordering Austria. The bridge over the River Inn joins the two countries. There are good train and boat connections to Linz, Vienna and even the Black Sea. Cycling trips begin here - you can hire a bike and cycle down the banks of the River Danube and return by boat or rail.
The 'Lilac' houses are located directly on the cycling path.
