The ancient Palazzo Palmieri is an historical sixteenth-century residence whose rooms today accommodate Relais LA SOMMITA’ .It stands on the back side of Ostuni Cathedral, which was completely reconstructed in Romanesque and Gothic style in the second half of XV century, under the Aragonese rule. The local charm and the ambience still remain the same as ancient times: from its secluded places you can overlook an entire tract of centuries old olives gently sloping down from the village to the sea. Palazzo Palmieri has been restored preserving all the original and structural features of the time that is why it has only nine suites. It was impossible for the experts who restored the castle to renounce the magnificent cross (star) vaults of the high ceilings of the castle, completely restored at sight and masterfully brought back to their ancient splendour.Guests can reach Relais LA SOMMITA’ walking down the way to Cathedral across the historical centre of Ostuni. There, among ancient building and secluded spots, they enter step by step an environment made of local flavours and smells where they could easily lose their grip on reality.This is the imperceptible but sometimes fairly unbearable feeling you can get entering the places of Relais LA SOMMITA’. An ancient olive tree in the background, the wine cellar of Relais LA SOMMITA’ induces intimate and convivial moments in the meantime. A stone-bored stair takes you to the entrance of three ancient tanks for the oil harvest, which are given today to wine tasting. Two big stone vaults holding the sophisticated restaurant Il Profumo overlook a Spanish garden where orange and olive trees grow luxuriantly. Restored fireplaces and a wood-burning oven, where bread and cakes are baked, take you back to the ancient times when the quality of life lay in simple and everyday gestures. Then, you can go upstairs climbing two different stairs up to the first floor where the ancient halls of the castle have been made into nine suites and two big open galleries into a reading room and a dining-room for breakfast time respectively.In the afternoon, when the bells of the Cathedral punctuate the hours, in the South wing of the residence, ground-floor, lip up only by the light of candles, there is a relaxing area where guests can savour tea infusions, chocolate and taste cakes just taken out of the oven in the complete silence of these places. This Suite doesn’t have a window at man’s height but a skylight in the highest part of the wall.Room 4 – “Il Mare”Beautiful junior suite with king size bed and bathroom with stone shower. This room has a big window with panoramic view.Room 5 – “L’Aranceto”Beautiful junior suite with king size bed and bathroom with stone shower.
