About Baikal Trail House
Experience the outdoor beauty of northern Lake Baikal. Severobaikalsk (Северобайкальск) is a base for coastal and forest trails, village homestays, camping by Lake Baikal and nearby lake, visiting hot springs, and hiking to a Stalin-era gulag mine. Independent hiking and touring is feasible. Guides can be arranged if desired. Severobaikalsk can be reached by the BAM train line and by hydrofoil from Irkutsk.
The Baikal Trail Property is about 1 km from the Severobaikalsk train station and about 2 km from the hydrofoil landing. It was started in 2007 to house Great Baikal Trail (GBT) volunteers and independent travelers. GBT is a Siberian based international effort to build trails in the Lake Baikal region to provide an infrastructure for ecotourism (an alternative to industrial development). Our staff is affiliated with GBT and the Severobaikalsk School for Tourism and Ecological Education. We are concerned with environmental protection and have knowlledge about outdoor activities. Your stay helps to support trail-building and environmental protection efforts.
