Why stay in Marrakech
Marrakech, which is also sometimes spelled Marrakesh, is a Moroccan city which is split in two - the old city, or Medina, where visitors will spend time admiring the historical architecture, and the new city, which has a lovely garden where tourists can escape for a bit from the chaos of the city streets. Marrakech might not be the best preserved or the most popular destination in Morocco, but it is a city with plenty to offer.
The Medina is where you will likely find most of the budget hotels and hostels, although the Gueliz area of the new city can be more quiet if you are looking for a break from the busy city. You will be able to get an inexpensive taxi from the Gueliz area to the Medina if you choose to stay in the new city. The word "riad" (sometimes also spelled "ryad") just refers to an old house that has been converted into a hotel or hostel; they can be like guesthouses or bed and breakfasts or more like hostels, and they will usually be less expensive than a traditional hotel. Remember that "hostels" are not only for the young or the backpacking crowd (even if the property has the word "backpacker" in the name!) - they are perfect for budget travelers who are interested in meeting other travelers. A few Marrakech hostels worth mentioning are highlighted below.
Dar Ftouma is in the heart of the Medina near the main public square. Riad Al Mamoune is in a 16th century building in the Medina which has been renovated with modern amenities.
Riad Massin is in a 19th century building a few minutes from the main public square in the Medina. Riad Dar Maia has only four rooms in the Medina, each with its own private bathroom.
If none of these hostels sounds like it is the right one for you, don't worry. There are other Marrakech hostels listed here which you can choose from. Just keep browsing the descriptions until you find the one that suits your needs.
