Why stay in Siem Reap?
Not everyone has heard of Siem Reap in Cambodia, but it is a good bet that most people have heard of the major sight that is located nearby - Angkor Wat. Siem Reap is the ideal place to base yourself for a visit to the Angkor park, but there are other reasons to visit - including the interesting Landmine Museum and the floating village of Kampong Phluck.
Because of the tourist Mecca Angkor has become, there are plenty of budget accommodations in Siem Reap - you should not have any trouble finding one to suit your needs. There are more guesthouses than hostels, but both offer cheap accommodations. In order to avoid paying too much for your bed, however, be sure to book early in the busy season. It is important to remember that "hostels" are not just for young people or the backpacking crowd (even if the place has the word "backpacker" in the name!) - hostels are ideal for budget-conscious travelers who are interested in meeting other travelers. A couple Siem Reap hostels worth mentioning are highlighted below.
The Villa Siem Reap is centrally located and close to the action, but far enough away as to be a quiet refuge from the city. Rosy Guest House is a small guesthouse with views over the river and royal gardens.
Bou Savy Guesthouse is surrounded by greenery and all room rates include an American breakfast. Queen Villa Angkor, formerly known as The Queen House Villa, offers cheap rooms that are a short walk from the old city center.
