Why stay in Shanghai?
Shanghai is a perfect example of making something out of nothing. In the 1990s, much of what is now covered in massive skyscrapers was still marshland. Someone decided Shanghai should become a giant metropolis, and within a few short years it happened. That doesn't mean Shanghai is a gleaming new city, however, and if you scratch the surface you'll see more of old China.
The architecture in much of historic Shanghai reflects its history when there was a French district and a British district, etc. The new part of the city, called Pudong, is purely modern. The goal was to become the economic center for China, and Shanghai is well on its way. Visitors to Shanghai, who presumably don't care as much about the financial empire in the city, will enjoy seeing the striking contrasts between the two parts of Shanghai - the Bund, the historical part, and the Pudong, the new city. Neither part is particularly peaceful, however, so for a little bit of breathing room stop in at one of the city's temples.
Accommodations in Shanghai aren't going to be the rock-bottom budget prices you're used to in other parts of Asia, but there are plenty of hostels to choose from anyway. Remember that "hostels" are not just for the young backpacking crowd (even if the property has the word "backpacker" in the name!) - they're ideal for any budget traveler who's interested in meeting other travelers. A few Shanghai hostels worth mentioning are highlighted below.
Koala International Youth Hostel is close to shops, restaurants and entertainment and all rooms are air-conditioned. Le Tour Shanghai Youth Hostel is close to lots of public transit lines to make visiting any point in Shanghai simple.
MINGTOWN Etour Youth Hostel is in the People's Square district close to the Nanjing Road pedestrian shopping area. Shanghai City Central Youth Hostel (Utels), with 150 rooms, is near the Jingan Temple area.
If none of these hostels sounds like it's the right one for you, don't worry. There are other Shanghai hostels listed here which you can choose from. Just keep browsing the descriptions until you find the one that suits your needs.
