About England
England is the largest of the United Kingdom's home nations, and the most visited. While many visitors never get outside the capital of London (with good reason - it's easy to spend weeks there and still not run out of things to do), there are plenty of worthwhile places to visit outside London, too.
For such a small country in terms of land area, England has a number of famous towns and sights. London is the center of England's tourism world, and understandably so, as one of the most popular tourist destinations on the planet. It's easy to take day-trips from London and see something of the southern parts of England, such as the beach resort of Brighton along the southern coast, the historic town of Bath with its fantastic architecture, home of Shakespeare Stratford-upon-Avon, former capital of England Winchester with its lovely cathedral, the famous university cities of Oxford and Cambridge and Canterbury with its famous cathedral. That's quite a bit to see, and that's all accessible from London!
A bit further afield, the Beatles fan will want to visit Liverpool, where the magic was born. A trip to Nottingham will give you a glimpse of the real Sherwood Forest (though it's a tad disappointing, it's fun to say you've been). Football fans will want to check out Manchester and its beloved home team, Manchester United (that is, unless you're a fan of Chelsea, in which case you'll want to stay in London). In the more northern parts of the country, York is a lovely city to visit, with Roman, Viking and Medieval ruins to explore, and the lakes in the northwest have been inspiring poets for ages.
Wherever you go, you'll want to save money by sleeping cheap - even if England is part of the European Union, they're still using the British Pound which is extremely strong against pretty much every other currency in the world. England is wonderfully easy to navigate by train, so getting from city to city is simple - whether it's for a day trip or a transfer. Be sure to get your BritRail Pass before you go.
