About Ireland
The Republic of Ireland takes up the vast majority of the island of Ireland - the rest is Northern Ireland, which is part of the United Kingdom. When people say "Ireland," chances are good they're talking about the Republic of Ireland - just like we are here.
Ireland is known as the Emerald Isle, and that's not because of all the leprechauns and four-leaf clovers, either. No, Ireland is a gorgeously green country, often with more tourists than residents, and some of the friendliest people you'll ever meet. Its capital city of Dublin, right on the Irish Sea, is a bustling and lively city. Other cities you might want to visit are Cork (Ireland's second-largest city), Galway (on Ireland's West coast), Kilkenny (medieval city) and Limerick (on the river Shannon). There are great stretches of city-less landscape, however, much of it windswept and dramatic. Some of the most famous Irish terrain is in County Clare - the area known as the Burren and the Cliffs of Moher are rugged in their beauty. In Ireland you can sample the country's famous Guinness and buy your mother some genuine Waterford crystal, but do take a moment - wherever you are in the country - to stop into the local pub and relax. If you're lucky, you'll get to hear some of Ireland's famous impromptu pub music.
Researching your trip ahead of time is well worth the time, especially in terms of accommodations. In the capital city of Dublin, the cheap hostels fill up fast, so you'll want to book ahead. Everywhere in the country, hostels are great places to not only lay your head but get a better feel for local life and also to meet up with other travelers. You can browse the Ireland hostels listed here by selecting a city on this page. You can also let the computer narrow your search down for you by putting your travel information into the search engine on this page - the list you receive will include only the Ireland hostels which are available. You can also find more specific information on Dublin hostels as well.
For the rest of your trip-planning needs, look no further than our Ireland Travel Guide which has lots of great ideas about what to do and what to see. You can even search for international airfare to Ireland right here. And keep up with day-to-day life in Ireland with our Ireland Travel Logue.
