About Brazil
South America's largest country, Brazil is a country with a reputation. Its name has become descriptive of its tiny bikinis as well as the procedure that happens to what's underneath those bikinis. Think Brazil and most people think of Carnival, that luscious and lascivious pre-Lent festival, and of the scantily-clad women who dance in the Carnival parades. But that's certainly not all there is to this vast country.
Visitors often begin their journey in Brazil in the city of Rio de Janeiro, and they are rarely disappointed. It is beautiful, exciting and full of life, and it is also overcrowded and home to immense networks of slums. Nearby Sao Paulo, Brazil's largest city, shows off its multicultural influences everywhere you look. Other cities that draw tourists are Recife (called "The Brazilian Venice" due to its many islands and bridges), Florianopolis (a city on an island full of lakes and lagoons) and Manaus (the place to go to visit the Amazon Forest).
Brazil certainly has some famous cities, but it's a large enough country to also include some beautiful natural landscapes. Brazil is home to the mighty Amazon river, which runs through its north, and the remarkable rainforests that surround it. The country has a long coastline which draws residents and visitors alike to bask in the sun. There are also the Pantanal wetlands in the central part of the country. In short, there is no shortage of nature to balance out your visits to Brazil's cities.
With all the festivals and celebrations throughout the year, both the prices and availability of cheap accommodations can vary widely. If you're planning your trip for one of Brazil's high seasons, you'll want to book well in advance. And if you don't see the word "hostel" in the property's name, don't let that fool you - many hotels are essentially what you'd expect from a hostel. The word "pousada" means guesthouse, so that might also be a word you'll see on some of the budget accommodations. In any case, sleeping cheap will give you both a better chance to get to know the local culture as well as a better chance of running into fellow travelers.
To find Brazil hostels in the places you'll be visiting, select a city from the list on this page and browse through your options. You can also let the computer do the work for you - just put your travel information into the box on this page and let the computer tell you what places are available when you want to stay. You may also want to refer to the Rio de Janeiro hostels page for more information.
And to finish planning your Brazil adventure, you can search for international airfare to Brazil and read about what to do and see there in the Brazil Travel Guide.
