Why stay in Nassau
Nassau is the capital of the Bahamas, and its history includes lots of pirate stories - including some about the infamous Blackbeard. These days you're not likely to run into pirates, you're just likely to have a relaxing beach vacation.
Even though Nassau is a capital city, it's easy to forget that it's a government town at all - it has a very easygoing reputation and there are plenty of sun worshippers who visit every year and who don't care at all about the Bahamian Parliament. The Parliament building, incidentally, is pale pink in color - that ought to make you feel relaxed.
When you're not sunbathing, you can meander the Old Town for a taste of Caribbean city life. You can visit the Bahamas' only zoo, Ardastra Gardens, Zoo & Conservation Center, and feed parakeets who just might eat out of your hand. You can get cultured in the National Art Gallery of the Bahamas. You can shop in the souvenir-laden Straw Market. And you can satisfy your kitsch-loving side with a stop at the Pirate Museum. C'mon, you know you want to.
Nassau isn't crawling with cheap accommodations, so if you don't want to spend a fortune on your stay, book your hostel in advance. Also keep in mind that "hostels" are not just for young backpackers (even if the property has the word "backpacker" in the name!) - they're just the thing for any budget traveler who's interested in being social and meeting other travelers. A couple noteworthy Nassau hostels are highlighted below.
The Towne Hotel is in downtown Nassau near the Straw Market, the beach and some of the city's historic sights. Orange Hill Beach Inn is a few minutes from downtown Nassau on a hill overlooking the ocean.
If none of these hostels sounds like it's ideal for you, that's nothing to worry about. There are other Nassau hostels listed here which you can choose from. Just read the descriptions until you find the one that matches your criteria.
