Why stay in Copenhagen?

Denmark's capital city, Copenhagen is a fantastic city to visit. There is no shortage of things to do and see, its people have a reputation for open-mindedness and it's a great gateway between Scandinavia and mainland Europe.

Copenhagen is a cultural treasure trove, with both what might be considered "normal" museums to the more quirky (and probably interesting). Some of the more off-beat museums include a Barbie Doll Museum (open only by appointment), the Workers' Museum and the Museum Erotica. The city is also famous for its "free city" called Christiania - the residents of Christiania will give guided tours if you arrange them in advance or, during the busy summer season, just show up at the main gate.

On the more traditional side of things, you can see the home of the royal family, the Amalienborg Palace, and watch the daily changing of the guard. You can also visit the Assistant Cemetery (full of famous Danish graves), the Carlsberg Brewery (guided tours twice each weekday), the Copenhagen Zoo, the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek (lovely collection of ancient, medieval and modern art) and see the Little Mermaid herself - the statue, that is. And you won't want to miss a trip to the famous Tivoli theme park, which has an assortment of activities and performances to keep visitors enthralled (especially the little ones).

Denmark in general is known for its higher prices, and Copenhagen is no exception. There are a few budget accommodations available, but be sure to book early - especially in the busy season - to make sure you don't break the bank on your bed. Also remember that "hostels" are not just for the young backpacking crowd - they're perfect for any budget-minded traveler who wants to meet fellow travelers. A few Copenhagen hostels worth noting are highlighted here.

Hotel Nebo Copenhagen is in the heart of the city near the train station and within walking distance of many of Copenhagen's main attractions. Absalon Hotel is in the Vesterbro suburb of Copenhagen, near Tivoli and the central train station.

Absalon Annex is near the Absalon Hotel in the Vesterbro neighborhood, near lots of shops, cafes and some of the great Copenhagen nightlife. Cab Inn Scandinavia is one of a few Cab Inns in Copenhagen, and has a maximum of four people in one room.

So, you're not completely enchanted with any of these options? Don't worry! There are plenty of Copenhagen hostels listed here. Keep reading the descriptions until you find the right one for you.

If you need anything else for your trip, you're in the right place. You can search for international airfare to Copenhagen and get on your way. And you can also read more about the city before you get there in our Copenhagen Travel Guide.
