Why stay in Manchester?

Manchester is one of the biggest cities in the United Kingdom, known for its place in the worlds of industry and music, and also for its famous football teams. Once upon a time, Manchester might have been considered a dirty city with nothing much to keep a visitor interested, but those days are gone. Today's Manchester is a lively cultural city with plenty to offer both visitors and residents.

From being a working class city in the past, Manchester has become an extremely cosmopolitan city today, with a reputation for tolerance in several senses of the word. Different races and religions mix peacefully in Manchester, and the city also is incredibly gay-friendly. Manchester is also where you'll find two of the UK's largest universities, so there is a thriving student culture as well. The area known as Castlefield is the site of the original Roman settlement, and other sights of interest include the Manchester Cathedral, Manchester Town Hall, St. Mary's The Hidden Gem, the UK's tallest sculpture at Sportcity (where the 2002 Commonwealth Games were held), and the football stadium Old Trafford (where Manchester United FC plays).

Manchester might be a fun city to visit, but that doesn't mean that it sees the number of visitors that a city like London does, so the selection of hostels isn't as great. Keep in mind that "hostels" are no longer restricted to the young backpacking crowd - they're ideal for budget-minded travelers who want to meet fellow travelers. A few notable Manchester hostels are highlighted here.

Hilton Chambers was opened in February 2006 and is in Manchester's Northern Quarter. Hatters Hostel has won awards in the past and boasts a great location in the fun and funky part of the city.

YHA Manchester is in the Castlefield area, a ten-minute walk from the city center, and includes a full breakfast with your stay. Trafford Hall Hotel is near the Old Trafford stadium as well as the Lowry Centre and Imperial War Museum.

Don't worry if none of these properties sound ideal - there are plenty more Manchester hostels listed here. Keep reading descriptions until you find the right one for you.

If you need anything else for your trip, you're in the right place. You can search for international airfare to Manchester and get on your way. And don't forget to read more about the city before you go in the Manchester Travel Guide.
