Why stay in Helsinki?
Finland's capital city of Helsinki is an international and cosmopolitan delight, although it may lack the typical "sights" you might be used to in other European cities. Still, Helsinki is blessed by its proximity to the water and the nearby islands offer lots of interesting things to do. In the city itself, there are churches, museums and parks which visitors can enjoy in any weather. If it is cold out, a sauna will warm you right up.
Getting around Helsinki is absolutely a breeze, from the fantastic tram network to the metro, bus, train and ferry systems, so getting from your hostel to anything you want to see and do in the city will be easy. In nicer weather, you might even want to rent a bicycle and see the city from your own two wheels. Accommodations in Helsinki are usually on the expensive side, so hostels are a great way to save money when you are traveling. Keep in mind that "hostels" are not just for young people or the backpacking crowd (even if the place has the word "backpacker" in the name!) - hostels are ideal for budget-conscious travelers who are interested in meeting other travelers. A few Helsinki hostels worth mentioning are highlighted below.
Hostel Mekka is in an 18th century building in the center of Helsinki. Finnapartments Fenno is a good option for traveling families, as they offer rooms with kitchenettes.
Eurohostel is near the Market Square close to where the passenger ships arrive. Hostel Stadion is in the old Olympic Stadium and offers mostly dorm-style rooms.
If none of these hostels sounds like it will be perfect for your needs, never fear. There are other Helsinki hostels where those came from. Just keep reading the listings until you find the one that sounds best to you.
