Why stay in Cologne?

Cologne is Germany's fourth largest city and sits on the Rhine river. It's an important city in Germany, as it's a large center for media and business as well as tourism.
Among the sights in Cologne is the Kölner Dom - it's the cathedral that dominates the city's skyline, and it's on UNESCO's list. You can climb to the top of the dome, which is quite a trek but worth it for the view. There are numerous other churches in the city you can visit as well, some with lovely stained glass. For a look back in time, visit the Römisch-Germanisches Museum which traces Roman history in Cologne. You can also spend some leisurely time in the city's parks.
If it's festivals you're looking for, visit Cologne in February for Karneval, the biggest annual celebration in the city. There's also a large gay pride festival called Christopher Street Day in July. Cologne is known for being very gay-friendly year-round.
Cologne has a good public transit system, including the subway, tram and bus, so getting around should be no trouble - whether you're going from attraction to attraction or just wanting easy access to your hostel. Also keep in mind that "hostels" are not just for the young backpacking crowd - they're perfect for any budget-conscious traveler who wants to meet fellow travelers. A couple Cologne hostels worth noting are highlighted here.
Dom Hotel Am Roemerbrunnen International is five minutes from both the main train station and the cathedral, right next to a metro station. The hotel has its own licensed bar and a restaurant. Meininger City Hostel Cologne boasts over 150 beds in more than 50 rooms, including singles, doubles and dorm-style rooms. The hostel is within walking distance of the cathedral, university and river.
Cologne-Deutz Youth Hostel is located on the right bank of the Rhine river opposited the Old Town and city center. Station Hostel for Backpackers is right at the central train station and within walking distance of both the cathedral and several nightclubs.
And don't worry if none of these hostels sounds like just what you're looking for. There are more Cologne hostels where those came from. Keep reading the descriptions listed here until you find the right one for you.
