Why stay in Munich?
Even with all Munich's history and art, most people come for one thing - the beer. While the annual Oktoberfest beer celebration attracts so many visitors the city bursts at the seams, Munich is a city which beer lovers can enjoy year-round. Munich's famous beer gardens are lovely places to enjoy a summer picnic along with your frothy beverage. If you are planning to visit the Oktoberfest, be advised that accommodations in every price range fill up quickly, so you'll want to book well in advance.
Thanks to a great public transit system, you'll have no trouble getting around the city and getting from your hostel to any of the city's attractions. A few of the notable Munich hostels are:
- Wombats City Hostel is listed in a few guidebooks, so don't be surprised if it's hard to get a bed in the high season. Wombats is very near the Hauptbahnhof (train station).
- Euro Youth Hostel also comes recommended by a few guidebooks, and is known for its social party atmosphere. It's near the train station and a short walk from the city's main attractions.
- Easy Palace has both private and dorm-style rooms, all with en suite bathrooms. There are even apartments for larger groups. Easy Palace is five minutes from the Oktoberfest grounds and subway stops.
- Meininger City Hostel Munich offers an "all inclusive" special that includes two meals a day and 10 free drinks (among other things) during your stay. Meininger is near the train station and less than 10 minutes from the city center.
Munich might not be Germany's capital, but it's certainly one of its most visited cities. Of course, the fact that the majority of the city's visitors show up during the annual Oktoberfest is probably just a coincidence, right?
The capital of Bavaria, Munich is noted for more than just its gigantic beer steins, however. It's a city of art and architecture, and it's home to several worthwhile museums and galleries. The trio of Pinkothek art galleries span art history from the 15th century to the present, and the Deutsches Museum is one of the largest technical museums in the world. The Residenz and Schloss Nymphenburg are two palaces which showcase the royal Munich of old.

The good news is that now you should have some money left over for beer.
