About Germany

Germany's sometimes troubling history can make it both a fascinating and somber country to visit, but the Germany of today - not to mention the German people - make the country one of the more pleasant and easy places you'll travel. The Germans are extremely welcoming and you may even find they speak English better than native speakers do!

Germany's main cities to visit are Berlin, its ever-changing capital, and Munich, the center of the country's world-famous beer culture. Berlin has been in an almost-constant state of reconstruction since the Wall fell, and that sense of rebirth makes the city feel quite alive. Munich has a charming historic center, and you don't even need to visit during Oktoberfest to get a taste for the region's famous beers. But beyond those two metropolitan areas, the German cities of Hamburg (with its harbor and its casinos), Cologne (with its cathedral and 2000 years of history) and Dresden (with its fantastic festivals and nightlife) are well worth any traveler's time.

Outside the cities, there are rural landscapes a-plenty for any outdoors enthusiast. You might not think of beaches when you think of Germany, but its northen border lies on the North and Baltic seas (though you probably won't want to go sunbathing much up there). There are also gorgeous forests, mountains and collections of lakes that are popular weekend destinations for Germans and tourists alike.

Germans are great travelers, and so are also great hosts. There are plenty of budget accommodations in most of the cities. Hostels are a great option, not just for young backpackers. Certainly some hostels are geared for young (or young-at-heart!) party people, but some are also run more like B&Bs. You just have to hunt until you find the one that sounds right for you. Staying in a hostel gives you a chance to get to know a place a little bit better, as well as meet other travelers from all over the world. To find the bed with your name on it, search the Germany hostels in this directory by choosing the city you'll be visiting. You may also want to read about the Munich hostels in particular.
