Youth Hostels in Greece
Greece is both a sun-soaked playground and the birthplace of Western civilization. It's perfect for a relaxing holiday or an educational excursion - or both in one trip! It's no surprise, then, that Greece is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world.
From the historic sights of ancient Greece - Athens, Delphi and Olympia - to its more than 2,000 islands, there is plenty to see and do in this small country. People who go to Greece for the history can't help but be seduced into relaxing on the beaches of the Greek islands, and people who go to Greece for the beaches can't help but stumble upon its historic monuments wherever they go. It's a win-win situation for everyone involved. Just don't go to Greece expecting it all to look like those pictures you've seen - you know, those whitewashed buildings and churches with bright blue domes. Those only represent the Cycladic Islands, and there is so much more to Greece than that one place, in terms of architecture, geography, cuisine and culture.
Sleeping cheap in Greece shouldn't be a problem, unless you're visiting in the high season and you're wanting to be close to the center of everything. If you're willing to stay a little further away from the beaches and nightlife, you'll be able to find a reasonably-priced bed. It might not be called a hostel, however - keep an eye out for listings that include the name "pension," as those tend to be smaller and cheaper than hotels. And despite the name, most "youth hostels" are not restricted by age. Hostels today are for budget-conscious travelers who want to get more of the local flavor of a place and meet fellow travelers as well. To search the Greece hostels listings, just choose the city that you'll be visiting and read the descriptions of the properties there. You can also put your travel information into the box on this page and let the computer search for you - it will tell you only what hostels are available when you're going to visit. You may also want to see the Athens hostels page for more information.
