Why stay in Kilkenny?
Kilkenny might be a small Irish town, but it is an incredibly popular destination - for tourists and Irish citizens alike. There is a fantastic castle, great medieval buildings and a thriving nightlife culture, so it is well worth a couple of days. Just be aware that on weekends especially the crowds will swell and that can mean the number of cheap accommodations decreases dramatically.
Even when Kilkenny is not crowded, however, there are not many budget accommodations in town - so even if you think you will be the only visitor in the area, it is a good idea to book your hostel in advance. It is important to remember that "hostels" are not just for young people or the backpacking crowd (even if the place has the word "backpacker" in the name!) - hostels are ideal for budget-conscious travelers who are interested in meeting other travelers. A couple Kilkenny hostels worth mentioning are highlighted below.
Kilkenny Tourist Hostel is in the center of the town, and family run. Macgabhainns Backpackers Hostel is also in the city center, a short walk from the train and bus stations.
If none of these hostels sounds like it will be perfect for you, do not worry. There are other Kilkenny hostels where those came from. Just keep reading the listings until you find the one that suits you.
Is there anything else you still need for your trip? Do not forget that you can search for the best deals on international airfare to Ireland and book your ticket now. You can also learn more about the area in our Kilkenny Travel Guide.
