Why stay in Rotterdam?

Rotterdam is the second largest city in The Netherlands and once was known for having the largest harbor in the world (not anymore, though, Shanghai swiped that title). Unlike its much more visited neighbor to the north, Amsterdam, Rotterdam isn't a big tourist destination. Its historic center was mostly destroyed during World War II, so there isn't a natural center around which tourists can congregate. However, the post-war buildings are interesting for anyone with an eye for architecture, and there are a few museums worth visiting as well. The Het Schielandshuis is the city's historical museum, and it's housed in the only 17th century building that's left in the city center. The Nederlands Fotomuseum is about photography in all its forms. The Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen has the city's largest collection of art spanning the centuries. The Rotterdam Zoo is a popular day trip. And yes, you can get the same things at coffeeshops in Rotterdam that you can get in Amsterdam. You know what we're talking about.
There are only a few hostels in Rotterdam, but you should be able to find one that suits you - especially since most visitors to the country are staying in Amsterdam. Do keep in mind that "hostels" are not just for the young backpacking crowd (even if the property has the word "backpacker" in the name!) - they're ideal for any budget traveler who's interested in meeting other travelers. A few Rotterdam hostels worth mentioning are highlighted below.
Hostel ROOM Rotterdam is a theme hostel, with each room decorated in a different theme. It's in the city center. Stayokay Rotterdam is also in the city center, a short walk from the Central Station.
Hostel Boat The Clipper gives you the experience of sleeping on a boat instead of on land. Mafkees is in the city center but is only open in July and August and also during the film festival in January.
If none of these hostels sounds like it's the right one for you, don't worry. There are other Rotterdam hostels listed here which you can choose from. Just keep browsing the descriptions until you find the one that suits your needs.
