Youth Hostels in Netherlands

Ask most people what they know about the Netherlands, and they'll either look at you blankly or say, "Amsterdam!" Well, this small country, often called Holland in English, is much more than just Amsterdam - even if Amsterdam is incredibly cool.

The Netherlands has a rich cultural history, though its independence is more recent. The area has been under the rule of Burgundy (then an autonomous part of France), Spain and Belgium. - at one point, the Netherlands was even part of the Holy Roman Empire (boy, those Romans sure got around). Because of this history, the Netherlands is rather diverse, especially for a country its size. It's also famous for its liberal attitudes to everything from prostitution to homosexuality to soft drugs. And you thought that
was all just Amsterdam, didn't you?

Amsterdam, the capital of the Netherlands, is a fantastic city in which to begin your trip, but don't let it end there. Delft is a beautiful canal-filled Dutch town with traditional architecture. Haarlem is home to the country's thriving flower bulb exporting business - when tulips are blooming, this is the place to be. The origins of Utrecht date back to 47 AD. The Hague houses the International Court of Justice. Maastricht is a lovely historic city with great shopping and restaurants. These are but a few of the great cities to visit in the Netherlands - and that's not even taking into account the places in between.

The Netherlands isn't the cheapest country to sleep in, unfortunately, but in the more touristy areas there are plenty of hostels to choose from. You can check out the Netherlands hostels by choosing a city from the list below, or you can plug your itinerary into the box on this page and let the computer do the sorting for you. Be sure to see the Amsterdam hostels page for more information on that city's hostels.

Thankfully, it's easy to get around the Netherlands by train (and within a city, by bike!), so you can get from city to city easily. Part of what's known as the BeNeLux region, the Netherlands is included in most Eurail Passes. Flying to the Netherlands is simple, since Amsterdam is such a major European hub - search for international airfare to the Netherlands and read about what to do and see in the country in the Netherlands Travel Guide.
