Why stay in Bern?
Bern, Switzerland's capital city, is one of those lovely and well-kept European cities whose old town is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Sometimes it seems like UNESCO gives those things out like candy, but Bern's old town is charming enough to merit its designation. The city is full of museums and sights to keep pretty much anyone happy, too.
Bern is not only easily explored on foot, it is downright pleasant to do so. If you are venturing away from the historic central area, however, the city's excellent network of public transit will get you wherever you want to go. This means it will be simple to get from your hostel to the city's main sights and back again. Keep in mind that there are not many hostels in Bern, so if you do not want to spend a fortune on your accommodations, you are advised to book early. Also, it is important to remember that "hostels" are not just for young people or the backpacking crowd (even if the place has the word "backpacker" in the name!) - hostels are ideal for budget-conscious travelers who are interested in meeting other travelers. A few Bern hostels worth mentioning are highlighted below.
Pension Marthahaus has 40 rooms in a quiet part of the city; ask for a room facing the lovely inner courtyard. Bern Backpackers calls itself the "most centrally located hostel" in the city - it is in the historic center of the city.
Landhaus Hotel is also in Bern's old town right next to the river. Youth Hostel Bern offers great rates with a variety of room choices, including big dorms.
If none of these hostels sounds like it will be perfect for you, do not worry. There are other Bern hostels where those came from. Just keep reading the listings until you find the one that suits you.
