Why stay in San Jose?
San Jose is Costa Rica's capital city, and a very popular tourist destination. Costa Rica has retained many of its beautiful green spaces and has long been at the forefront of eco tourism, so you will find lots of "green" throughout the country. San Jose, however, is anything but an unspoiled city. Even if it is not completely green itself it is at least surrounded by greenery, so that is something, and environmentalism is still prevalent in the city, too.
Getting around San Jose is easy with a cheap and reliable bus system and cheap metered taxis. This means you should have no trouble getting from your hostel to anywhere else in the city and back again. Keep in mind that "hostels" are not just for young people or the backpacking crowd (even if the place has the word "backpacker" in the name!) - hostels are ideal for budget-conscious travelers who are interested in meeting other travelers. A few San Jose hostels worth mentioning are highlighted below.
Hostel Bekuo is one block from San Jose's main street and has been rated highly by several guidebooks. Mi Casa Hostel is in a safe neighborhood close to the airport and main bus terminal.
Kabata Hostel is close to the city's university and one block from Central Avenue. Casa Yoses Hostel can accommodate 50 guests and has a huge garden overlooking the mountains of San Jose.
If none of these hostels sounds like it will be perfect for your needs, never fear. There are other San Jose hostels where those came from. Just keep reading the listings until you find the one that sounds best to you.
