Why stay in Valencia?

The city of Valencia is the capital of the Spanish province of the same name and sits on the Mediterranean Sea. It's a lovely and pleasant city to visit.

Most cities on the Mediterranean would - one would think - be primarily beach destinations. Not so with Valencia. Yes, there are beaches in Valencia, but providing the ideal locations for sunbathing isn't the city's reason for living. The city center is not even near the beach. That focus might have changed slightly recently, as the city played host to the 2007 America's Cup.

One of the highlights of a visit to Valencia is a trip through The City of Arts and Sciences, which includes a Science Museum, Planetarium, Aquarium and Arts Museum. It was designed by the architect Santiago Calatrava, who is from Valencia, and sits where the river Turia once flowed through the city. It was redirected and now, along with The City of Arts and Sciences, the area where the river used to be now includes a lovely park, a boating lake, athletic fields and playgrounds. It's a fabulous place to spend an afternoon. You'll also want to visit the Barri del Carme, which is the old historic neighborhood of Valencia. If you're lucky enough to visit in March, you'll get to see the city's Fallas festival, with its giant displays of papier mache and its fireworks shows.

The prices for Valencia's accommodations are going to fluctuate depending on the season, and they'll be especially high during festivals or special events. If you'll be visiting during a festival, you'll want to book well in advance. And you'll want to keep in mind that "hostels" aren't just for young backpackers anymore - they're perfect for budget-conscious people who want to meet fellow travelers. Hôme Deluxe is in Valencia's historic area and has just ten double or twin rooms. Hôme Youth Hostel says it's the hostel without bunk beds, and the maximum number of beds in a dorm-style room is four.

Russafa Youth Hostel is a five minute walk from the train station and the old city on a quiet pedestrian street. Rooms Deluxe Hostel is a short walk from The City of Arts and Sciences, and the city center and beach aren't far away, either.
