Why stay in Nice?

Nice, to beat that dead horse even further into the ground, is nice. Now that that's out of the way, let's get down to business.

Nice is a popular spot for anyone looking for that sunny Mediterranean holiday. With its prime location on the French Riviera - close to Provence and the playground of the rich, Monaco - Nice sees massive amounts of tourists every year. Some come for the nightlife, some come for the sun, some come for the topless sunbathers. Whatever your inclination, you're sure to get your fill.

Since it's almost a required stop on any backpacker's tour of Europe, Nice has a nice selection of budget accommodations to choose from. Generally speaking, the further you get from the beach, the cheaper the rates will get. Don't worry if you don't see the word "hostel" in the names of every property listed here - often the French equivalent of a hostel is called a guesthouse or bed and breakfast. And as long as the price is right, it doesn't really matter what it's called, right? A few Nice hostels worth nothing are highlighted below.

Chambers Chez L'habitant Chez Brigitte.B is in the heart of Nice, a 15-minute walk from the beach, in what's considered a Nice style home. Nice Home Sweet Home is also only a short walk to the beach, and includes breakfast with your stay.

Hotel Le Lido is only one block off the beach and each room has en suite bathrooms as well as mini kitchens. Villa Saint Exupery actually calls itself a hostel, and has been recommended by guidebooks. It's a little further away from the heart of everything, but you can get around by bus easily - it's a 20 minute bus ride to the beach, for instance.
