Why stay in Hamburg?
Hamburg is Germany's second largest city, and it lies on the Elbe River in the north of the country. It's a historically important city because of its harbor, and nowadays is also a media hub for Germany. While it might not be as popular a tourist destination as Berlin or Munich, there is still much to see and do in Hamburg.
Hamburg's city center is full of interesting-looking buildings to see, shops to browse in and museums and churches to visit. Some of the quirkier sights include Miniaturwunderland, the world's largest model railroad setup, and the Hamburg Dungeon, a mildy-cheesy look at the city's dark past. You can get a glimpse of the city's present-day alter-ego in the Reeperbahn area - the city's red light district. If you're looking for a casino or are in the market for a sex toy, this is the place to go. On the more serious end of things, you can pick up a booklet detailing all the city's museums and satisfy your cultural side. Don't miss a walk along the Elbe River, either.
There are lots of hotels in Hamburg, but not as many hostels. If you're planning to visit during one of the city's many annual festivals, you'll want to book early to make sure you've got a bed that won't cost you a fortune. And keep in mind that "hostels" are not just for the young backpacking crowd (even if the property has the word "backpacker" in the name!) - they're ideal for any budget traveler who's interested in meeting other travelers. A few Hamburg hostels worth mentioning are highlighted below.
WIRA Guesthouse is in the heart of Hamburg, two stations away from the main train station. Pension Kieler Hof is 200m from the main train station in the city center.
Hotel Terminus am Hbf. is near the South train station. A&O City Hotel and Hostel Hamburg is three stops from the main train station in the Hamburg Hamm district.
If none of these hostels sounds like it's the right one for you, don't worry. There are other Hamburg hostels listed here which you can choose from. Just keep browsing the descriptions until you find the one that suits your needs.
